Resume Tips

Resumes are your first chance to impress a future employer. Once you have decided that you would like to work in a certain area or with a particular company, you must prepare a resume. Take your time to do this right. A little extra time spent here will pay off. A resume that looks like garbage will end up in the garbage.

The purpose of your résumé is NOT to get you a job. The purpose of a résumé is to get an interview, not a job. Once you get in the door, it's your winning personality and discussion of your lifetime of experiences that will get you the job.

At a glance, a resume must look impressive and make the reader want to read it. Many resumes are only scanned first and sorted by appearance! It must be well balanced, honest, and informative. Spelling or grammar errors can cost you a job!

Applications

Some employers request that you complete an application form. They may or may not want your resume or cover letter. Follow their instructions exactly. Pay strict attention to the directions on the application. Always print clearly using a black or blue pen.

Application forms are usually fairly easy to complete. You should read the complete form first, paying attention to lines and blocks. Answer all quesitons (use N/A if the question is not applicable). If possible complete a draft copy, which you can complete first and check before completing the "original."

Most application forms have additional space near the bottom for further comments. Use this wisely and carefully. This is your opportunity to provide that little extra assurance that you are the person they are looking for!

Completing job application forms over and over again is a tedious job. But keep in mind that the employer is assessing you. The information you give and the way you organize and present it are important factors in determining whether or not you are selected for an interview. This is sometimes all the employer has to go on - some companies do not take resumes. It may be your one and only chance for a great opportunity. Take the time to make the best impression possible.
